Zombies!

The article “The zombie film and its cycles,” I found to be a very interesting article and what I got from is it that after 9/11 the most tragic day authors started making movies and books about zombies. They figured that if everyone died in the world that there would be only zombies walking around and they are known to be the hardest things to kill if someone by chance survived.
Some popular movies today about zombies are dawn of the dead, return of the living dead and day of the dead that’s not just all the zombie movies they seem to make a new one every year. They when have a TV show out now that called “The Walking Dead” I could only watch that show for 5 minutes and totally changed it really fast. Some people I know actually like shows like that but I don’t.
Zombies are these creepy monsters that are known to be created magically by witchcraft. Everyone knows this is totally fiction because it’s never going to happen, people die for good. It’s crazy how much people make for the movies and books they make about zombies. If it was that easy to make billions of dollars on a silly movie about zombies I would. It’s a weird way to see death but people do believe that things would happen like that.

Vampires and Werewolves!

Stories of monsters have become very popular lately; the majority of the readers and watchers are the younger generation. Walking through books stores all you ever see these days is about vampires, werewolves, witches, etc. The most popular monsters being vampires and werewolves, with every story line making them out to be some kind of hero. Writers are betraying them to be hero’s so that readers aren’t afraid to watch or read about them. Flipping through TV shows these days you’re sure to turn to a couple of them being about vampires or werewolves.
The most popular book out these days is the series of twilight; this series has three books out that they have made into movies. The novels being eclipse, new moon and breaking dawn, these movies are about a teenage girl falling in love with a vampire. There is also this boy Jacob that is a werewolf. After much research the girl finds out that the boy she loves is a vampire but even knowing what she knows she still loves the boy. Edward which is the boys name introduces the girl to his family which being many more into there life.
This series is very popular and has been made into movies as well as books, I heard from this series from my sister which it’s probably the only thing she feels normal doing being she is in the military. She has read every book that has came out and watched every movie. I think people have gotten really attracted to this series that they get everything of this series from bedding, back packs etc. This series has made people see that vampire and werewolves are very fiction but they get the joy in reading and watching.
Writers have also wrote TV series about vampires, the recent one being vampire diaries which is a American teen supernatural drama television series developed by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec, which is based on the book series of the same name written by L.J. Smith. This series takes place in Mystic Falls Virginia a fictional small town haunted by supernatural beings. Its main focus of the series is the love triangle between the female Elena and Stefan and Damon all of whom have dark pasts.
Being that twilight was very popular with the public and made so much money, people on television wanted a show that would being in just as much money. This show was also to make the public to be happy and enjoy watching the show. That is the most important thing is to make the watchers happy and this show does. I heard of the show again from my sisters, being she is a huge fan of twilight she was a fan of this one to. I find this show myself to be very weird but if I would have watched and read twilight I would also be a fan of this.
Writers today want reading to see that vampires and werewolves are truly fiction and not to be scared to watch the movies and TV shows they come out with. Mysteries stories have become very popular these days and that are were a lot of the money comes from. People like my sister would stand hours and hours just to be able to see these kinds of stories. With TV shows if a show isn’t being watched with so many people the show is taken off so when they find something people really like they make it in so many ways.

Werewolves!

My first site I found about werewolves is the Wikipedia it has some really interesting facts about werewolves like etymology, folk beliefs, and origin of werewolf beliefs. I have never really looked up them before so it was interesting finding sites I actually liked and that had good information. I believe this is the website I am going to use mostly being it has so much information. Like this also says that werewolves continue to be in modern culture and fiction, with books, films and television shows.( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Werewolf
Most everyone has heard of the twilight series that’s one of the hugest things going around these days.

The next site I found I thought was really cool but I didn’t find the person that wrote it, it listed this from the definition, origin, types, mythology, history and powers. The powers part just sounded really cool so I think that’s going to be one of the things I talk about in this paper. It says that werewolves are immune from aging and from most physical diseases. (http://werewolves.monstrous.com/werewolves_powers/) I think really anyone would want that just so they could live longer and never get sick. But all this is fiction so it won’t happen but it would so be nice if people never got sick or got cancer.

Then the last site I found was totally interesting to me, I tried finding a different one but it seems to be really hard to find a good site. I don’t really know if I will use anything from this site because most of what is wrote is just repeating from the other two sites I listed. The only cool thing about this site is the pictures it has on it. That’s really all I would use for this site but it was a lot of fun looking up werewolves. Another thing that was cool is talked about getting bitten by a werewolf, nothing its fiction kind of stinks but it still is really cool to find out about them.

Final Project!

I believe that I will be doing option #2; I think monsters are the coolest things to write about. I just really didn’t understand the Frankenstein book at first but now that I understand it better it’s actually a really great book. I don’t really know what text to use yet but there is a lot of really great stories about monsters. My nephew really loves reading about monsters so it will be cool to research it for class and have some stories to tell him. What I am hoping to accomplish from this project is like everyone hopefully getting an A on it. Not really good at writing stories but getting to pick my own thing to write about will be nice. As everything I research with would be Google you can find a lot of great things on there and also living close to the library I will also get some books on things I will be talking about. I think it’s better to actually read about monsters in a book because you get into it more then setting in front of a computer.

For whom this may concern...

My biggest challenge in this class so far has been understanding poems I have never really had to so it
took me a while to truly understand it. I had to read it probably about ten times, the last draft I did in the hospital when my mom was in surgery. All I had was my phone which I am glad it has a word app on it.
I think the biggest success finally understood the poem even though being stressed out about my mom, I think when you’re not thinking about it is when you finally understand it.
The reading in the class has made me see I can actually understand what’s in front of me it just takes time and patience. Its something I am totally not good at been I think with the things that are put in front of you are lessons for the future.
Analysis is totally different then anything I have done before but that’s what school is about learning things you have never done before. Writing has always came hard to me and its not always the great thing but I don’t give up and make excuse for myself.
Goals for the second part of this class are hopefully nothing else happens that makes me have to hurry in doing it. I missed one assignment because my mom had to be taken to the hospital. I am always wishing the English came easy to me, at times it is but when I have to write about things I don’t really understand is hard. Like I could talk about the military, kids etc but when having to do a poem I was lost.

Critical Response!

I chose to write about The Women of Frankenstein by William Veeder. The article doesn’t say when it’s written but its pg 271-273. In this article William starts out by saying that Mary was very sense of the weakness in herself and womanhood that makes her defensive in Frankenstein. It tells the reading that women are no more immune than a man to weakness, and that Mary justifies that women are less then weak. It states in the article that there is a lot of weakness in Frankenstein and that we must be more attuned than most criticism has been to the careful controls which prevent readers from responding. It also talks about Justine and her weakness when she has to go to court and the lessons her and Elizabeth has to face.
The author is right about Frankenstein, it does show a lot of weakness and readers have to be careful with all of the criticism. After reading every article in this book this is the only one I could really relate to, women are seen as weak but if we are told we can’t do something we are the first to prove you wrong. There are ways we are weak, and that’s a lot of us show are emotions and that can get ourselves in trouble but we are very caring people. I believe that this would be a great article to use because people can totally disagree with me, don’t think a lot of women would but men would.

Revision!

I believe that revising is the hardest thing when it comes to writing a paper, and it’s totally not my favorite thing. When you have to fix your paper you’re always hard on yourself and think all of it’s bad. That’s totally what I do when I was revising my paper; I have to read my paper over and over. When reading my paper I didn’t like it at all so I started all over, and just keep reading the poem until I finally figured what to write. My week hasn’t been the best so I decided I would do a paragraph at a time, my phone has a notepad on it so when I got good ideas I would just write them down. I even did this when I was watching a YC soccer game, I can’t just sit at a computer and come up with good ideas I like walking, reading, listening to music, etc.  I don’t really revise my paper I ask friends or family to look at them, I always think something wrong. The benefits of revising are finding out if the story really makes since and if it’s any good. You even want to make sure everything is spelled right, yes you have spell check on your computer but you have to make sure you are using the right word. I have never really been good at writing papers, and never did anything with poems. Going to high school my English teachers always did essays so this was the first time I really had to sit down to figure out a poem. It’s totally not my favorite thing to do but I did it. I actually liked this poem just wish it was about something I liked and cared about, like poems about military and 9/11. When writing something I have to be into it but I am glad classes make students go outside there comfort zones.

Frankenstein

“Being thus provided, I resolved to reside in this hovel, until something should occur which might alter my determination. It was indeed a paradise, compared to the bleak forest, my former residence, the rain-dropping branches, and dank earth. I ate my breakfast with pleasure. And was about to remove a plank to procure myself a little water, when I heard a step, and, looking through a small chink, I beheld a young creature, with a pail on her head, passing before my hovel. The girl was young and of gentle demeanor, unlike what I have since found cottagers and farm-house servants to be. Yet she was meanly dressed, a coarse blue petticoat and a linen jacket being her only garb, her fair hair was plaited, but not adorned, she looked patient, yet sad. I lost sight of her, and in about a quarter of an hour she returned, bearing the pail, which was now partly filled with milk.”
When you read a book you always want a statement or paragraph that you feel you are actually there and doing it, when reading this paragraph that’s the way I felt. I felt like I actually saw this women and that’s what I love about books. You can go into a whole different world and think about something different. The out of this whole paragraph one part of it really made me think I was there, “Yet she was meanly dressed, a coarse blue petticoat and a linen jacket being her only garb, her fair hair was plaited, but not adorned, she looked patient, yet sad.” Just this statement made me want to read this book even more; at first sadly I didn’t want to read it. I hate reading a book that you can’t feel your actually there and escaping to a whole different world. So far this book is really good, I thought it was just going to be about Frankenstein but it's totally not.

Fairy Tale Logic

When reading the poem Fairy Tale Logic by A.E. Stallings, your attention goes right to the first words Fairy tale. As a child everyone goes to this magically place, for girls it’s that a princess charming is going to rescue you and for boys it’s about dragons or being invisible. All of these are impossible but as a child nothing is impossible. Children just want a magically place they can call there own and where nothing bad happens.
The poem is spoken in a way we have known since we were little from the stories are parents have told us at bedtime. It shows us that logic of fairy tales is full of impossible tasks just by the first verse “Fairy Tales are full of impossible tasks.” What I feel she is trying to get across that even though things in life may seem impossible we have to fight for things we want in life. Something I was told going up is that you can accomplish anything that you put your mind to.
When A.E. Stallings says “gather the hairs of a man-eating goat, or cross a sulphuric lake in a leaky boat” it seems very silly and totally impossible. But that’s what this poem is about all the silly things we read growing up and some of the things we actually believed. Like “The language of snakes, perhaps, an invisible cloak,” everyone believed as a little kid that we could be invisible and no one could see us if we didn’t want them to. We all know now as we get older that it’s totally impossible.
Then the last verses “marry a monster. Hand over your firstborn son” to us now this totally sounds crazy but as a child we believed that. I feel by all these verse that the author wants us to see how silly the stories we were told growing up and that it makes the child really believe its true. In a way it’s a great way for kids to escape to a different world but then it makes a child believe something that’s totally not true and it gets a child’s hope up. Poems can be interpreted in so many different ways.

Fairy-tales!

After reading all these poems about five times, I finally decided to read Fairytale Logic by A.E. Stallings one more time and that’s when I thought about my childhood and all the stories everyone wished would come true like Cinderella where the prince came to rescue her. As a child we feel like we are escaping in a whole different world and want our prince to come save us.
“You have to believe that you have something impossible up your sleeve” (line 10) is my favorite line of this poem. With all the fairytale stories I read as a child I never believed in this, I always felt I wasn’t worth anything and no one was going to love me. After awhile and a lot of people telling me otherwise I started to finally believe I could do anything I put my mine to. The day I graduated high school I knew it was true, so I am a big believer that you have something impossible up your sleeve.
“The will to do whatever must be done” (line 13) this line makes me think about my friend. She is one amazing person and she has the will to do anything even if she is sick. People have amazing will to do anything, and at times you feel like that person is a super women or man.
Growing up with all these fairy-tales children start believing that there parents or grandparents are these magic super hero’s that have all these cool powers. At times it’s a great feeling because it makes children feel like nothing will happen in the world. Fairy-tales make children believe so many things like you can marry a monster like beauty and the beast. Stories like that make children think that what is inside is what really matters. You would think that when we were little we were already getting life lessons.

"Good Readers Good Writers"

Nabokov said this " A good reader, a major reader, an active and creative reader is a re reader"...I feel he is right about this, when I read a book for the second time I understand it better then the first time. He gives a list of what makes a good reader which I found interesting and how he says pick four of them. What makes a good reader is different for everyone I feel a good reader is someone that understands what the writer is talking about. At times it can be hard to fully understand what a writer is trying to get across. I feel that I am a okay reader, the problem I have is writing but I guess that's what English classes are for.
